○ This paper delves into the significant role of local oral history in shaping and understanding the identity of Jeollabuk-do, South Korea.By exploring the oral narratives of diverse individuals who have contributed to the region's development,

this study aims to address the shortcomings of quantitative and formal records.

Focusing on regional identity and local pride, this research investigates the oral history of Jeonju Namboo Market: a representative traditional market in Jeollabuk-do.

○  By exploring the dynamic changes in the market space and the interweaving of individual lives with geographic, economic, and cultural contexts, this research sheds light on how the processes of industrialization, urbanization, and transportation have transformed local life. The study recognizes the multifaceted nature of local communities, and underscores the pivotal role of individuals as key contributors to the historical narrative.

○  The research methodology involved collaboration with eight local writers who completed the local oral history course at the Jeonbuk Gender Equality Center. Nine team members were paired with nine female merchants in Jeonju Namboo Market, each conducting three interviews. The oral data was transformed into draft narratives, refined through joint meetings, and finalized by undergoing expert review.

○ This paper highlights the diverse experiences and relationships within the primary social groups of participating merchants, covering topics including family, education, employment, marriage, childbirth, and connections with in-laws. It examines how the merchants started their work in Jeonju Namboo Market and explores the associated oral narratives on the histories, traditions, and cultures behind different market products.

○ The study uncovers the impact of socio-cultural changes and historical events, such as the May 18 Democratic Movement, on the prosperity and deterioration of traditional markets. These oral histories significantly contribute to restoring the region's history and offer valuable insights into different lived experiences.

○ In conclusion, this paper advocates for the deeper utilization of oral materials, specifically recommending the publication of an oral data collection, expanded opportunities for local oral recorders, and the establishment of a digital archive for audio files and transcription originals. It proposes the ongoing planning and management of, collaborative efforts in, and potential applications of oral historical records, such as through exhibitions and regional historical education.
